Canada’s North: By China for China
In her recent Globe and Mail article, Arctic360 CEO Dr. Jessica Shadian examines China’s “Polar Silk Road” initiative, which is part of China’s overall Belt and Road Initiative. Shadian asserts that through the initiative, China “plans to own and develop the infrastructure and trade backbone of Canada’s Arctic,” thereby filling a gap left unfilled by the Canadian government. By investing now, China stands to gain large returns in the long-run. Shadian calls for Ottawa to deliver an Arctic strategy and invest in infrastructure to keep Canada’s Arctic Canadian-developed and Canadian-owned.
